Annual Puppet Show... |

In conjunction with the Alamance County Service League, Family Abuse Services has been presenting a puppet show called “There’s Someone To Talk To” for over 15 years now. Service League puppeteers and FAS community education facilitator(s) present this puppet show to every 3rd grade class in Alamance County. The show spotlights 4 different types of child abuse with specific emphasis on physical abuse, neglect and sexual molestation. The situations of abuse unfold through the telling of the puppets either to a friend or a counselor or a teacher. In each scenario the puppet is shown to be at school where encouragement is given to involve parents and community in a child’s different situations of abuse. After each show, a question and answer segment includes questions geared to emphasize the truth that children truly can speak up, tell their parents, talk to their teachers, counselors and friends. With the facilitator’s guidance, children reflect on alternative solutions for difficult situations and share their thoughts on the details of the show. Each puppet is called out by the children with the facilitator’s prompting and powerful feedback is exchanged from puppet to children and vice versa. At the conclusion, the children are encouraged to write a letter to their school counselor and share how they feel about the puppet show, what they thought was cool or silly or sad and if there are any situations they are going through like the puppets encountered. They are encouraged to remember: There is someone to talk to. Every year this community outreach touches the lives of children and sets a child free to speak up about abuse. This year on February 28, FAS’ Community Educator and Service League facilitators presented the puppet show to Haw River Elementary 3rd grade classes. Within days a teacher’s assistant was suspended as a result of the contents of letters from these courageous students. On Friday, March 2, the school system suspended David Haase with pay. He resigned the following Monday and was arrested after investigation on Thursday, March 8.
