Volunteer opportunities range from general clerical assistance to crisis line coverage for those willing to invest in the training.

General clerical assistance includes phone coverage, filing, copying and help with mail or other basic office needs.

Crisis line coverage is another area of opportunity with Family Abuse Services and requires an investment in 10 hours of training as well as background check for those not affiliated with a formal service learning organization.

Typically, crisis line coverage may include offsite mobile phone coverage with the volunteer insuring focus and availability to those clients who call in for assistance. There is also opportunity for
onsite crisis line coverage. This service includes another area of volunteer
involvement at Family Abuse Services: shelter support.  With the onsite coverage
of crisis lines, shelter support is sometimes included and works especially well for
interns needing to fill a specific number of service hours. The combined help
increases the hours credited within that timeframe.

Volunteer Services Description

Family Abuse Services also has many special events which require extra help
and services from volunteers. Some of those events include but are not limited
to the following:

October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Speak Out
Crop Walk
Annual Gala

Community partners often adopt our agency for a year or a period of time during which they provide tremendous input in a variety of ways, some include donations, special decoration projects e.g. FAS nursery, refreshments for support group as well as child watch during support group.

Elon Community Church is our most recent volunteer group with their Women’s Fellowship beautifully providing care packs for shelter residents, children of shelter residents, books, shawls and other needful items as well as delicious refreshments for significant functions within our agency and with the community. We are grateful for their generosity and ongoing support of FAS.

Training for our more focused volunteer positions is a requirement with the maximum investment consisting of a total of 8 to 10 hours in which the volunteer will be familiarized with the realities of domestic violence, sexual assault, crisis line protocol and shelter dynamics. These particular opportunities require special commitment and dedication to the work of aiding victims of domestic violence.
