Family Abuse Services provides bi-lingual assistance to clients in a variety of ways. Latina clients seeking protective orders, shelter or general guidance during crisis situations find our staff able to help them cross the language gap and make vital decisions for safety. Immigrant issues are carefully handled with sensitivity and informative collaboration with a view to aiding victims of domestic violence without fear of removal. Our concern is for the immigrant victim of domestic violence without regard to citizenship status. FAS works closely with Legal Aid and other agencies in determining the best options for those trapped in abusive situations with few options. Growing concerns with citizenship status and basic welfare provision continue to dominate our focus in spite of and sometimes because of changing state and national laws. Cultural differences present minimal to no challenge for our agency simply because there is no unique distinction where violence is concerned. There is no ethnic barrier to understanding the devastation of domestic violence. Monica Moreno is our Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and can be contacted at mmoreno@familyabuseservices.org.
