Our Court Advocacy Program Provides…

...experienced and seasoned counsel through the protective order process. The protective order process includes determining whether needs are best met by a domestic violence protective order, known as a 50(b) or a no-stalking order. The protective order may provide, depending on court ruling, immediate emergency relief, known as Ex Parte Relief, for situations with fear of imminent danger while awaiting the court date to determine the outcome of the protective order request. During this time FAS counsels as to the best course of action, including the best safety plan, whether or not to seek Legal Aid, options for shelter as well as many other factors including economic hardship.

Family Abuse Services’ court advocates are present during court proceedings as support for victims. While the court advocate cannot give legal advice or instruct a client, the support given aids the client in determining what is best for the situation and provides a solid partnership of support to stand against abuse. This part of our advocacy is best described as court accompaniment and empowerment through presence.

Linda Garrick has been our Court Advocate Coordinator since 2003 and provides expert guidance for those seeking clarity and support on the path out of abuse. Sarah Wilson is our newest court advocate assistant, providing assistance for the 50(b) process.

Any questions concerning our court advocacy and accompaniment program can be directed to Linda Garrick at 336-226-5982 or lgarrick@familyabuseservices.org. Sarah Wilson can be reached at the same number or e-mailed at swilson@familyabuseservices.org.
