Safe Exchange & Supervised Visitation

Family Abuse Services’ Visitation Center provides a safe environment to allow children to have conflict-free relationships with each of their parents, no matter what the situation.

What is safe exchange?

Safe exchange, or monitored exchange, is supervision of the transfer of the child from one parent to the other. Supervision is limited only to the exchange or transfer of the child between the parents. The remaining contact between parent and child is not supervised.

The focus is the transition period when children are going from one parent to the other for custody or visitation purposes. This ensures that no child will have to endure a volatile or tense atmosphere, with subsequent conflicts, during this time. Our program provides neutral ground, with no contact between the estranged parents. This gives children freedom to show their true feelings upon departure from one parent and arrival with the other, eliminating potentially violent or tension-prone situations.

What is supervised visitation?

Supervised visitation is provided during actual visits between non-custodial parents and children in situations where domestic violence, child abuse, or other harmful behavior is present, alleged or undergoing investigation. Supervised visitation allows parents to maintain contact with their children in a safe and neutral setting during these transitions, enabling them to build and re-build relationships during times of upheaval.

Monitored Exchange Appointments

• Wednesdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
• Fridays, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
• Sundays, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Supervised Visitation Appointments

• Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Visitation Center is a program Family Abuse Services that partners with the Burlington Police Department, Mental Health, and the Department of Social Services. The Visitation Center is a member of the North Carolina Supervised Visitation Chapter and of the Supervised Visitation Network.
